A course should guide a student from their current state to a specific outcome. Start with the outcome, then build only the lessons needed to reach it.
Define the promise
Write one sentence that explains what students will be able to do after finishing.
For example: "Build and launch a paid Notion template in one weekend."
Break the course into modules
Modules should represent stages of progress. Keep them clear:
- Setup.
- Build.
- Publish.
- Improve.
Avoid using modules as a dumping ground for unrelated ideas.
Keep lessons focused
Each lesson should teach one useful step. Shorter lessons are easier to finish and easier to update later.
Add supporting files
Use files for templates, worksheets, examples or checklists. Make sure each file belongs to the lesson where students need it.
Publish when it is useful
Your first course does not need to be huge. A focused course that gets students to the promised outcome is stronger than a long course they never finish.
